Stanford University Urban Studies &
Urban Summer Fellowship
Student perspectives of community-engaged learning and research across the United States
Welcome, Urban Studies/Urban Summer Fellows!
Today, we kicked off our fellowship by hosting a meet and greet orientation at the Haas Center. Thirteen students will be embarking on summer fellowships throughout the U.S., in cities such as New York, NY; Washington, D.C.; Oakland, CA; and St. Louis, MO, working on a broad range of urban issues ranging from environmental justice to housing policy for federal government agencies to not-profit organizations. Orientation began with an icebreaker (which involved a beachball!), followed by an overview of fellowship expectations such as posting weekly on this blog and participating in video conferences every two weeks in small groups. We also introduced the Four Pillars of Sustainability Field Guide to Cities framework as a way of assessing and making sense of place, especially when encountering neighborhoods in cities for the first time. Follow our journey here and look out for more posts in the upcoming weeks!
